CAMAS FARMERS MARKET AWARDED QUAKER CONSUMER GO GRANT TO PROVIDE LOCAL FAMILES WITH FRESH PRODUCE

Camas, WA, August 24th, 2009 - The Camas Farmers Market was recently awarded a “Consumer Go Grant” from the Quaker Company to provide fresh produce to low-income families in Camas and Washougal. Because of this grant, the staff of three local organizations have been given tokens to purchase fruits and vegetables directly from market vendors for families who may otherwise be unable to afford them.

Fresh produce will be included in family emergency food baskets at the Treasure House in Camas and East County Family Resource Center in Washougal. In addition, the chefs at the Crown Villa Senior Apartments in Camas will be able to include fresh market produce in the meals they prepare for residents. “Thanks to this grant, families and seniors who might not otherwise have access to fresh food can enjoy the bounty from our wonderful market vendors” says Jamie Morin, Camas Farmers Market board member and Operations and Finance manager.

The Quaker Company’s “Consumer Go Grant” program awards grants to projects in communities nationwide that are working to fight hunger. This year, the “Go Grant” project provided $50,000 in funds to 100 grass roots projects to feed hungry families across the country.

The Camas Farmers Market, held each Wednesday from 3:00-7:00 on 4th Street in front of the library in downtown Camas, is in the midst of its busy second season. The Camas Farmers Market’s mission is to provide the community access to local farmers and food producers and to encourage growing, preparing and eating locally grown and produced foods.

The “Consumer Go Grant” project is one of the market’s programs to foster connections between local food vendors and vulnerable populations. The market also encourages consumers with EBT cards and WIC vouchers to shop at the market.   For more information about this and other community outreach and education efforts, please visit the market information booth or contact Carrie Schulstad, board member and Outreach and Education manager at info@camasfarmersmarket.org or (360) 838-1032.
